Michigan Compared to Other States

The typical U.S. child care program assumes that parents with young children work regular work hours—i.e., 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Monday through Friday. But what about parents with non-standard work hours? Many parents work at night or on the weekend, especially in sectors like hospitality, retail, health care, and manufacturing. For these families, child care at these times can be difficult to find.

Using data from the American Community Survey, the PPA research team has identified state differences in need for non- traditional hour care, with Michigan sitting at the national average. The summary brief (below) also shows notable differences in need for non-traditional hour care by household income and a potentially surprising trend in demand for this type of care.
