William Bushaw
About
Dr. William Bushaw has demonstrated exceptional educational leadership in a variety of roles in Michigan and nationally. He provides guidance to clients in strategic visioning, leadership development, communications, information gathering, and policy development.
Dr. Bushaw served as executive director of the National Assessment Governing Board, which produces the National Assessment of Educational Progress, the Nation’s Report Card. He was chief executive officer of Phi Delta Kappa International, leading a family of education associations.
In Michigan, he was deputy superintendent of the Michigan Department of Education and state director of the Michigan North Central Association, which provides accreditation and evaluation services to more than 1,500 K-12 schools. He was also a principal, assistant principal, and teacher in various Michigan school districts.
He is widely published and has won many awards, including the Michigan Association of Secondary School Principals Outstanding Educator Award and the Lester B. Anderson Award for best dissertation in school administration at the University of Michigan. He was inducted into Eastern Michigan University’s College of Education Alumni Hall of Fame.

Also notable
For 30 years, Dr. Bushaw served in the U.S. Navy, active duty and reserve. On active duty, he was gunnery officer aboard the USS Joseph Strauss, DDG-16. Transitioning to the reserves, he was appointed commanding officer for several Naval Reserve units. During his military career, he was awarded personal decorations, including the Legion of Merit.
