Michigan’s unemployment rate has soared because of the Covid-19 pandemic, and economic uncertainty will hover for the foreseeable future. Nearly half of the state’s workers are in occupations considered to be high-risk for layoffs.
The vulnerability of workers is not equally spread. Areas of disparity include race, gender, and education. In its latest issue brief, “Michiganders at Risk of Unemployment: Identifying and Aiding Workers in Need,” PPA takes a fresh look at Michigan’s data and suggests practices and policies for workforce agencies and others seeking to assist the most at-risk populations.
