Forging Relationships for Michigan’s First Statewide Housing Plan

July 26, 2021

The lack of safe and affordable housing in Michigan impacts not only individuals, families, and communities, but also statewide economic development. Michigan’s housing context is further challenged by the results of racism and discrimination, funding gaps, the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, and other factors.

Over the past year, Public Policy Associates has been facilitating the development of Michigan’s first statewide plan for housing. When completed in early 2022, this plan will lay out a set of priorities, goals, and strategies for action by partners that address Michigan’s broad housing needs, including eliminating housing inequities.

In close collaboration with the Michigan State Housing Development Authority (MSHDA), PPA has brought together stakeholder organizations through a State Agency Group and a Partner Advisory Council. The State Agency Group members represent 17 different agencies. The Partner Advisory Council is made up of over 30 members, representing a wide mix of state-level organizations and perspectives. These groups have helped to define the priorities and goals for the plan, as well as to inform ongoing outreach and engagement activities.

To further inform the plan and MSHDA’s strategic direction, a set of research activities were also conducted, including a survey of over 6,500 residents of Michigan and literature review of innovations and trends.

Next month, more organizational representatives will have the opportunity to join the conversation and share their strategy recommendations. Input from national housing experts, a public feedback survey, and a series of regional town halls will round out this highly inclusive process.
