This position is eligible for remote work, although Michigan residence is preferred. Occasional travel to Lansing, Michigan, may also be required.
The Role
Are you a talented data visualization specialist who excels at making documents (MS Word and Adobe) look sharp and professional? We are seeking a creative, detail-oriented individual to join our research and consulting team who can contribute substantially to PPA’s product development and boost our public presence-building activities. This will allow us to optimize our performance, engage strategically with our partners, and leverage our potential to drive change.
You will be responsible for turning our research into compelling visual content (including static reports and dynamic dashboards) for a variety of digital and print audiences. In addition, a significant part of this role involves formatting existing documents (in Word or other similar software) to ensure they adhere to brand guidelines while maintaining design integrity and visual appeal. PPA is actively seeking to improve the look and feel of our final publications.
This role will use design and data visualization tools to present information from research, evaluation, and strategic consultation projects. PPA’s materials are meant for policymakers, practitioners, and the public. The ideal candidate will have strong proficiency in Canva and the ability to use the platform to translate complex research findings into clean, engaging visual content.
Key Responsibilities
- Design a variety of materials (e.g., presentations, reports, flyers, and social media graphics) that align with PPA branding.
- Format and edit documents in Microsoft Word, PowerPoint, and other programs to ensure quality, brand consistency, and a professional look.
- Transform text-heavy documents into clean, professional, and visually consistent PDFs and Word files.
- Collaborate with other team members to translate ideas into strategic, compelling design solutions.
- Work with raw data from spreadsheets and/or dashboards to produce polished, branded, and easy-to-understand visualizations.
- Design visually appealing web pages and other digital assets (banners, icons, images) for PPA’s social media sites, its website, and specific client needs.
- Prepare production-ready files for both print and digital distribution.
- Develop and maintain branded templates for Microsoft Word and PowerPoint to be used across the company.
- Create charts, graphs, and infographics to make complex information accessible.
Qualifications
- A bachelor’s degree or beyond in graphic design, visual communications, or a related field is preferred. We will consider candidates with other proven professional experience as graphic or visual designers, as demonstrated by a strong portfolio.
- Proficiency in Adobe Creative Suite (e.g., Express, InDesign, Photoshop, Illustrator) and Microsoft Office Suite (e.g., Word, PowerPoint, Excel, and Power BI), including advanced skills in Word document formatting and template creation, such as creating styles, slides, and linked tables of contents.
- Proficiency in correctly applying grammar, punctuation, and APA citation style.
- Ability to suggest ways to highlight key information, maintain a logical flow of ideas, and improve written drafts.
- Ability to design and edit with a specified audience in mind.
- Exceptional attention to detail.
- Proficiency in applying professional standards to layout, typography, color theory, stock photo and icon selection, and file setup.
- Ability to work effectively independently and with coworkers.

- Experience with data tools like Flourish, Tableau, or Power BI preferred but not required.

- Ability to contribute ideas for project processes and fulfill PPA’s culture and equity statements.

Supervision
This position reports to the Chief Strategy Officer and will be an active member of PPA’s communications team. For specific project-related items, this position reports to relevant project managers.
