Public Policy Associates President Paul Elam organized a fundraiser to support the Michigan Council on Crime and Delinquency (MCCD) as well as a youth football and mentoring program in Lansing.
Dr. Elam serves on the board of the MCCD, and focuses his work on criminal and juvenile justice. The featured speaker at the fundraiser was Carlos Marino a former Michigan State University football player and youth counselor who turned his life around after serving a 10-year sentence for a drug conviction.
Supporters of MCCD, along with members of the Kappa Express Athletics youth program, were in attendance in the September 7 event at the Lansing Boys and Girls Club.
“I am proud to support MCCD as an important voice for smart justice policies and at the same time share Carlos’ powerful message, especially to young people,” Dr. Elam said.
PPA and MCCD were partners with the state of Michigan in the development of the Michigan Prisoner ReEntry Initiative, which was created to help parolees succeed when they return to the community. The initiative was lauded as a national model for enhancing public safety, reducing recidivism, and saving tax dollars.
