Partnering with Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development (MDARD) to improve access to fresh produce for food insecure Michiganders.
The Michigan Department of Agriculture and Rural Development manages various USDA-funded competitive grant programs aimed at improving the competitiveness of Michigan-produced specialty crops (fruits and vegetables, tree nuts, dried fruits, horticulture, and nursery crops). They award grants for projects related to education, food safety, marketing and promotion, pest and plant health, production, research, and other topics.
In 2016 and 2017, MDARD retained PPA and our partner, Michigan State University Center for Economic Analysis, to analyze the economic impacts of several rounds of key grant programs (Strategic Growth Initiative, Value-Added/Regional Food Systems, Specialty Crop Block Grant). Our work included a comprehensive analysis of the economic impacts of the grant awards and leveraged funds, analysis of program outputs, and a review of other states’ approaches to the use of federal funds.
